Aerial “Scissors” Lifts (MEWPs): Fundamentals for the Trainer - Virtual

Do you have employees operating and/or working around scissors lifts, now often referred to "Group A" mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs)? Are your trainers qualified to facilitate proper training? As OSHA still recognizes "scissors-lifts" as mobile scaffolds, there are many unique requirements that set scissors-lifts apart from other aerial lifts and scaffold-systems. Furthermore, in both general industry and construction OSHA requires that each "operator" of any MEWP, and each "user" of any mobile scaffold be properly trained prior, and trainers must be "qualified". This course is specific to "scissors-lifts" (i.e. "Group A" MEWPs), and is intended for trainers as well as superintendents, managers, supervisors, foremen, and safety personnel, to understand design and loading principles, requirements and consensus standards, and the responsibilities of qualified trainers. Topics include:

  • Types of scaffolding and mobile elevated work platforms
  • Design, loading and capacity
  • Inspections and maintenance
  • Environmental factors and work-site inspections
  • Foundation and support
  • Safe operation and use
  • Fall protection and restraint
  • Operator training and evaluation
  • Training for supervisors, occupants, and other personnel

NOTE: The Minnesota Safety Council recommends trainers and supervisors renew their training every three years to remain apprised of changes and updates.

See “Aerial “Boom” Lifts (MEWPS): Fundamentals for the Trainer” for “Group B” straight-boom and articulating-boom MEWPs.
