Electrical II: Safe Work Practices and NFPA 70E
Did you know that energized work is only permitted under certain
circumstances? Did you know energized work is only permitted to be
performed by a qualified person? Can you identify what must be done to
set up the work before energized work is permitted? Did you know all
qualified persons performing energized work must be trained a minimum of
every three years, and unqualified persons must also receive training
where energized work is being performed? This virtual course is for
qualified persons (e.g. electricians, technicians, maintenance), as well
as supervisors, managers, foremen and safety personnel, to understand
the various safe electrical work practices associated with performing
energized electrical-work. The goals of this course are to help
participants understand, implement and maintain a proper “Safe
Electrical Work Practices” program. Discussion will include relevant
safety standards under OSHA and NFPA 70E, including the most recent
updates under NFPA 70E – 2024. Topics include:
- Nature and hazards of electrical energy
- Understanding “shock” hazards
- Understanding “arc-flash” hazards
- Safe electrical working conditions (i.e. Lock-out/Tag-out)
- Establishing work clearances
- Establishing approach boundaries
- Selection and use of electrical personal protective equipment
- Working around overhead power-lines
- Risk assessment, pre-planning and energized work permits
- Elements of a written “Safe Electrical Work Practices” Program
- Employee training requirements
