Auditing Your Safety Management System

Proactive organizations recognize the benefits of using a systems-approach to workplace health and safety. With a safety management system (SMS), companies not only reduce workplace injuries, but can also positively impact production, safety culture, and human capital management. Our course starts with an introduction to different SMS models (OSHA VPP, ANSI Z10, ISO 45001), and swiftly proceeds to the SMS auditing process.

Length: One Day

Auditing the SMS is vital for its sustainability and future progress. Attendees will learn basic SMS audit criteria, view different audit scorecards and checklists, and walk away with an outline for writing internal audit protocol/procedures. During workshops, participants will evaluate and score their current SMS and determine corrective action strategies. A large focus of this course is identifying the roles, responsibilities, and qualifications of the audit team. This course provides the experienced safety professional with tips, tools, skills, and techniques to conduct a successful SMS audit for the organization.

Topic Objectives:
  • Identify key elements of commonly used safety management system models.
  • Explain why an SMS is more than just a “safety program.”
  • Identify the phases of a SMS audit (plan, execute, report, record, follow-up, closure).
  • Identify effective audit criteria for the safety management system.
  • Evaluate effective analytical tools (checklists/software) to assess and measure the performance of the SMS.
  • Score their current safety program or management system.
  • Explain the roles, responsibilities, and qualifications of effective auditors.
  • Outline an audit protocol/procedure for their company.

Who Should Attend? This course is suitable for health and safety managers or auditors with at least 5 years of auditing experience.
