The design of delivery trucks creates special difficulties. Drivers often don't realize
that they have large blind spots which lead to backing collisions. The width of these
trucks makes side-swiping common. The height of the driver's seat makes it difficult
to spot straggling pedestrians at intersections. And frequent rear-end crashes occur
because drivers don't allow for the straight truck's weight and long stopping distance.
The National Safety Council's four-hour "Coaching the Straight Truck Driver" course
includes a comprehensive video and slide presentation, driver workbooks with
reinforcing exercises and a certificate of completion.
Fee is $500 (1-10 students) plus $25 for each additional student, and travel
expenses, if any.
