Falls kill more than 20,000 people in the United States every year, and injure millions more. Within the category of unintentional injury deaths, falls rank third (after motor vehicle crashes and poisoning) as a leading cause of death.
In the home, falls rank as the second leading cause of death. Falls can trip up people of all ages, but according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, most falls happen in the home to people age 65 and older during everyday activities.
