A total of 54,500 unintentional-injury deaths and 13.1 million disabling injuries occurred in the home in 2008 (most current data available, National Safety Council.) Since 2000 deaths in the home (and death rates per 100,000 population) have steadily increased.

From infancy through age 9, our children are most at risk at home from suffocation, fires,
drowning and falls. Poisoning emerges as the leading cause of death in the mid-teens through the early 60s, when it is eclipsed by falls.
