Unintentional injuries ("accidents") are the leading cause of death in Minnesota from ages 1 – 44, abruptly erasing nearly 1,700 lives each year and devastating surviving family and friends. These deaths are the tip of the injury iceberg: according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control, for every unintentional injury death in Minnesota, there are another 69,000 hospitalizations and 1.85 million emergency room visits. Most of these injuries and deaths are predictable and preventable.
In addition to human suffering, the cost of fatal and non-fatal unintentional injuries is enormous, estimated by the National Safety Council at $625 billion in 2005 (most current data available). Motor vehicle crashes alone are estimated to have cost Minnesota $1.66 billion in 2005. The following information contains the most current data available.
