Traffic fatalities fell to 567 in 2004, down 13 percent from the year before. Preliminary figures for 2005 are
similar to 2004. Alcohol-related crashes increased 6%. Minnesota's seat belt use rate reached a record-high 84
percent in 2005, compared to the national rate of 82 percent.
Contributing factors in crashes vary by the driver's age, and whether the crash involved a single vehicle
or multiple vehicles. Leading factors for fatal crashes across all ages were illegal or unsafe
speed, driver inattention or distraction, chemical impairment, and failure to yield the right of way.
