How to Promote Helmet Use: Schools and Youth Groups

Raise parents' awareness

  • Put articles in school newsletter; send flyers home.
  • Present information to parent organizations. Suggest to parents that their kids start wearing helmets when they get their first bikes (or trikes). Remind parents to wear a helmet whenever they ride.
Make it easy for families to get helmets at a low cost
  • Work with a local bike shop or distributor to sell helmets at a special event.
  • Distribute coupons for low-cost purchase.
  • Conduct a fund-raising campaign to subsidize helmets for kids in your school, church or youth group.
  • Contact local civic groups, such as the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. to provide support for your program (supplies, financial, volunteers).
Help kids get into the helmet habit
  • Put posters in school hallways, classrooms, or the lunchroom.
  • Give presentations on helmets to elementary school classes.
  • Give prizes or rewards to kids who wear their helmets every time they ride.
Educate children about why they should protect their heads
  • Hold a school assembly about the importance of wearing bike helmets. Feature speakers from a local bike shop, the police department or hospital trauma center.
  • Work with teens or other interested people to conduct a bike safety camp, bike rodeo, classroom presentation or workshop on bicycle safety.
  • Conduct a poster contest on helmet use and display posters at school, the local mall, city hall or city libraries.
