How to Promote Helmet Use: Community Campaigns

An effective bike helmet campaign depends on the efforts of many groups in the community.

What's the problem?

  • Very few kids wear bicycle helmets.
  • Most parents don't realize the danger to their children.
What needs to be done?
  • Parents need to become aware of the problem.
  • Helmets need to be made available at reasonable cost.
  • Children should:
    • pick out their own helmets.
    • be encouraged to wear them.
    • be rewarded for wearing them.
How does a community campaign work?
  • Form a coalition of concerned people.
  • Set goals, for example, increasing helmet use among children by 10% a year.
  • Work with local media to inform the public about the campaign.
  • Distribute pamphlets and posters about bike helmets for kids in malls and businesses, and at community civic functions.
  • Hold educational events for children and parents, such as bike rodeos.
  • Make low cost helmets available through non-profit or civic organizations.
  • Encourage bike shops and mass-market stores to provide discounts on helmets.
  • Invite businesses, safety groups and community leaders to support the efforts of the coalition.
  • Support the development of an ongoing program to educate about traffic laws and the importance of helmets.
