Minnesota Operation Lifesaver Annual Report, 2009

Minnesota Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (MNOL, Inc.) is a 501(c) (3) organization. Contributing partners include but are not limited to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway; Canadian Pacific Railway; Union Pacific Railroad; Operation Lifesaver, Inc.; Canadian National Railway; Twin Cities & Western Railroad; Minnesota Prairie Line, Inc.; the Minnesota Safety Council; LORAM Maintenance of Way; Minnesota Department of Transportation; Association of Minnesota Counties; Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad; Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad; Northern Plains Railroad; Northern Lines Railway; Minnesota Dakota and Western Railway; Minnesota Southern Railway; Progressive Rail, Inc.; Federal Railroad Administration; Metropolitan Transit Commission; Twin Cities Public Television; Lowry Hill.

In 2009, thirty-eight MNOL, Inc. presenters provided over 494 presentations educating more than 14,000 participants on the lifesaving message of highway-rail grade crossing safety. Presentations were provided to students K thru grade 8; high school and adult driver’s education classes; school bus drivers; professional truck drivers; law enforcement; fire fighters and various civic groups and clubs. In addition, MNOL, Inc. presenters participated in over 87 special events held at various locations throughout the state including conferences, county fairs, community events, and safety camps reaching over 22,000 additional individuals. Three specialized grade crossing collision investigation (GCCI) trainings were also conducted.

Ten new presenters went through the training in 2009 and one new associate was trained.

MNOL, Inc. sponsored a statewide Re-Certification/Appreciation event in August hosted by LORAM Maintenance of Way, Inc.

Additional highlights are Minnesota Operation Lifesaver’s participation in several grant funded projects that allowed us to:
  • Provided professional drivers and safety educators throughout the state new professional driver videos.
  • Form a new partnership with Metropolitan Transit Commission for the new NorthStar passenger rail service.
  • Post billboard, print, radio and television public service announcements on rail safety throughout the state.
